I completely agree that some deschooling needs to happen. And unfortunately deschooling can’t happen while they are in (or preparing to go back to) school.

I’m not sure of your kids ages, but my suggestion would be to really get on board with what they are doing. Make popcorn or snack platters, setup a movie viewing area and really get into watching Spongebob with them. Embrace what they love *whole-heartedly* and engage in their activities with them. You’ll be amazed at how it expands your relationship and your lives.

Meredith! I don’t get Pokemon. My kids aren’t into it, but I like to think that I’d be okay with their interests whatever they may be. Right now it’s Disney movies and especially the bonus features about how they are made.

Parents who shut their kids off from them are missing out on laughter, discussions, and fun visuals, making connections between actors’ voices featured in multiple movies, spinoff play and projects… Anyway. Great post.

As a Food Network lover, I will never bash Television. I think television has it’s place in society just as everything else. I also don’t think it’s passive. I am constantly thinking, learning, and doing all while watching TV! we’ve learned so much from television, whether we are watching cartoons or whether we are watching the history channel.

Roblynn – Thank you for sharing that story. It made me smile. Giving him the opportunity to do what he needed to do to get his life together is a gift in itself. I’m not the best player. A Warlock is kind of complicated and I die a lot. I just keep going and learning bits and pieces as I go!
