That Kind of Mom

Ronnie Maier hosted an impromptu blog carnival based on a post by Flo. It was beautiful, inspiring, amazing. Malila and I read many posts together but Bonnie, a grown unschooler, wrote one about her mother and it inspired Malila to write her own. I am posting it here because it is lovely and I can, LOL. — Faith

I am thirteen and I have been unschooled my entire life. My entire life my mother did everything in her power to make sure I had everything I needed and almost everything I wanted, my mom is my friend and my partner. She is considerate of my feelings and thoughts. Recently, as I get older she is helping me safely explore the world.

My mom is the kind of mom that…
rubs her kids feet and backs at night even though she needs sleep.

the kind of mom who goes out to the grocery store for three items and comes back with thirty yummy snacks.

the mom who drives twelve hours so her kids can see their friends.

the mom who lets her child play one song on repeat all through the night even though their rooms are right next to each other.

the mom who doesn’t mind when her nine year old runs around in nothing but underwear with underwear on her head and socks on her hands.

the mom who problem solves when her kids need something difficult, rather then say no.

the mom who lets her kids cut color and style there own hair.

the mom who lets her daughter try school for one month, then drop out because she was bored.

the mom who puts her kids needs ahead of her own every time.

the mom who helps her children be who they are and never trying to change them.

That’s my mom, there for me my whole life whatever I need because she is just that kind of mom.

That last comment is from my 7 yo. These are some sweet unschooled kids, I’m a bit teary-eyed. (that last word is meant to be though, not tough :-)
